Most Mother's Day gifts are just fine. There's nothing wrong with flowers, chocolates or candles - those are all lovely gifts and always appreciated, but while they're thoughtful they're also fleeting! Sometimes it's nice to be able to gift something that will last.
A birth flower necklace can be that gift. Here's why it works so well for Mother's Day, and how to choose the right one.
The May connection
May's birth flower is the lily of the valley. Graceful and delicate, with drooping bell-shaped petals and a soft scent, steeped in folklore and deeply linked with motherhood, sweetness and purity. It's been threaded through royal wedding bouquets for generations. In our Auckland studio, it's been carefully hand-sculpted into a pendant.
If Mum's birthday is in May, this is the necklace. But even if it isn't, gifting her the flower that represents the month Mothers Day is celebrated is a heartfelt gesture! It takes it from a generic occasion gift to something connected to the relationship between you.

Buy her birth flower, not a May necklace
This is the thing people sometimes miss. Mother's Day is about her, which means the necklace to buy is her birth flower, not a May necklace just because it's May. Find out her birth month. Look up her flower. Choose that one.
That shift, buying something connected to who she is rather than just the date on the calendar, is what makes it land.

A few flowers worth knowing about for Mother's Day
September — Aster (patience, hope, valour)
A September mum: steady, patient, quietly courageous. The aster is a star-shaped flower that carries exactly those qualities. One of our most meaningful pieces to give.

June — Rose (romance, beauty, passion)
A handmade rose pendant, small and worn close to the heart, is a different thing entirely from a bunch of roses that'll be gone by Friday. Our June necklace features a classic deep red rose for the mum who deserves something lasting.

November — Chrysanthemum (loyalty, longevity, joy)
For the mum who has always shown up. The chrysanthemum has symbolised loyalty across cultures for centuries. A November necklace for a November mum feels quietly earned.

What makes this different from a bunch of flowers
Real flowers are beautiful and they're gone. A birth flower necklace she'll reach for on the mornings when she wants to feel like herself. A piece of jewellery with a specific meaning, connected to her rather than the occasion, that she can wear every day, layer with other pieces, or save for something special. That's the difference.
Every piece is handmade in Auckland, arrives in plastic-free recycled packaging, and is $26. 20% of our annual proceeds go to the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.
A note on timing
Mother's Day in NZ falls on the second Sunday in May. We'd recommend ordering at least a week before to allow comfortable delivery. We ship overnight within New Zealand, but if you're cutting it close, get in touch and we'll do what we can.
